Dreaming of Waste: Medicare Overpays for Sleep Studies

Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs
Subcommittee on Federal Spending Oversight and Emergency Management
Abstract
From the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, the Subcommittee on Federal Spending Oversight and Emergency Management led by Senator Rand Paul issued a weekly waste report examining the Federal Government's funding of various sleep studies and its accompanying oversight over the studies and their funding. The report looks into reports of overpayment in these studies, and the oversight utilized to combat these problems. The report finds that the lack of adequate oversight regarding the distribution of funds and payment has led to constant overpayment of sleep studies which has resulted in waste that could total approximately $175 million.
