Exposure to Hazardous Air Pollutants in Los Angeles

House Committee on Government Reform
Abstract
The minority staff of the Committee on Government Reform of the U.S. House of Representatives investigated the extent to which the public is exposed to hazardous air pollutants. This report presents the results of this investigation. There are 188 chemicals designated as hazardous air pollutants under the 1990 Clean Air Act (the Act). The study shows that many residents of Los Angeles are exposed to hazardous air pollutants at levels much higher than the levels the Act establishes as safe. This report also identifies the sources of hazardous air pollutants that pose the highest risks.
