Southern Border Wall: Soaring Cost Estimates and Lack of Planning Raise Fundamental Questions About Administration's Key Domestic Priority

Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs
Abstract
At the request of Ranking Member Claire McCaskill, the Minority Staff of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs issued a report regarding the Trump administration and the Department of Homeland Security's plan to construct a border wall. Key findings include that there is no reliable cost estimate on border wall construction but current extrapolated estimates amount to $70 billion, that maintenance costs may total $150 million/year, that no reliable cost estimate of anticipated land acquisition on the border exists, and that litigation to acquire the land may take more than a decade.
