Abstract
The Subcommittee on National Security, International Affairs, and Criminal Justice of the House Committee on Government Reform and Oversight investigated the National Drug Control Strategy to find potential shortcomings and recommend solutions. The subcommittee found that casual teenage drug use, which is associated with juvenile violent crime, had increased in almost every age group, despite the anti-drug policies that had been implemented. Moreover, they found presidential strategies did not try to fix demand or supply-side issues, and instead were underdeveloped and underprioritized. In order to remedy the problem, the subcommittee recommended allocating a budget for drug-use prevention efforts, prioritizing drug-use prevention alongside addiction treatment, establish interdiction programs to reduce illegal drug importation, and restore accountability in the government by setting goals and increasing specificity in reduction plans.
