Abstract
The Special Investigations Division of the House Committee on Government Reform investigated the White House energy plan, revealing that 65 provisions favor companies that had undisclosed meetings with the energy task force led by Vice President Cheney. The White House has acknowledged meetings with representatives of 158 energy companies, including top donors to the Republican party, but only two companies have been identified in the press. The energy plan, issued in May 2001, reflects the interests of these donors, benefiting major oil and gas companies, electric utilities, coal mining, and the nuclear industry through recommendations such as financial subsidies, easing environmental regulations, and supporting controversial practices like nuclear fuel reprocessing. Enron, having had multiple meetings with the task force, gains advantages in the plan, including support for deregulation and backing for its troubled project in India.
