Prescription Drug Coverage, Utilization, and Affordability for Senior Citizens in California

House Committee on Government Reform
Special Investigations Division
Abstract
The Special Investigations Division of the House Committee on Government Reform investigated prescription drug affordability for senior citizens in California. The Medicare program did not cover the cost of prescription drugs, resulting in many seniors struggling to pay for their medications. The investigation found that 34% of California seniors reported they had no prescription drug coverage in 1999, a figure that was increasingly rapidly. Similarly, the report found both uninsured and insured seniors were struggling to afford prescription drugs.
