Medicare Drug Cards Provide Few Discounts in South Dakota

Abstract
The Special Investigations Division of the House Committee on Government Reform evaluated the effectiveness of Medicare prescription drug cards, launched on June 1, 2004, in delivering discounts on prescription drugs for seniors in South Dakota. Analyzing 31 available drug cards in the district, the report specifically examines the pricing of the top ten brand-name drugs commonly used by seniors. The findings reveal that, aside from low-income seniors eligible for a $600 subsidy upon card enrollment, most seniors in the district are not experiencing significant discounts, resulting in limited or no discernible benefits.
