Conflicts of Interest in Vaccine Policy Making
House Committee on Government Reform
House Committee on Government Reform
Abstract
The Committee on Government Reform investigated federal vaccine policy to determine how conflicts of interest are handled. The Committee found that the conflict of interest rules have been weak, enforcement has been lax, and committee members with substantial ties to pharmaceutical companies have been given waivers to participate in committee proceedings. Thus, the report recommended that the FDA and CDC be more rigorous in identifying conflicts of interest and adopt stricter standards for the determination of conflicts of interest. Moreover, the Committee recommended that Congress modify existing laws related to conflicts of interest waivers on vaccine-related advisory committees to disallow the granting of waivers for participation and voting by individuals with direct financial ties to affected vaccine-manufacturers.
