Subcommittee on Federal Spending Oversight and Emergency Management
Abstract
From the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, the Subcommittee on Federal Spending Oversight and Emergency Management led by Senator Rand Paul issued a weekly waste report discussing government use of taxpayer money to insure farmers. The report explains that the Department of Agriculture is paying out around $370 million annually in "prevented planting" crop insurance to farmers who cannot plant their crops in seasonal wetlands. The report finds that some farmers claim prevented planting each year for regular flooding and believes that this is abusing the insurance system, as the intent of the program is to compensate farmers for incidents of extreme weather.
