Waiting Times for Veterans Health Care in Georgia

House Committee on Government Reform
Special Investigations Division
Abstract
The Special Investigations Division of the House Committee on Government Reform investigated waiting times at VA primary and specialty care clinics in Georgia, revealing significant issues. Many appointments for Georgia veterans were not scheduled in a timely fashion, with an estimated 36,000 appointments in 2003 expected to exceed the 30-day goal. Some veterans in Georgia face waits of over six months for appointments. Thousands of veterans are placed on waiting lists, preventing them from scheduling medical appointments for months. Due to budget shortfalls, the VA is rationing care for Georgia veterans, proposing additional restrictions that could deny VA health care to over 30,000 veterans in the state.
