The Removal of the Inspector General for the National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak)

Senate Committee on Finance
House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform
Abstract
The Senate Committee on Finance and House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform investigated the unexpected retirement of National Railroad Passenger Corporation Inspector General Fred Weiderhold. This report found that Wiederholt's years of experience provided him the ability to recognize and target Amtrak's areas of weakness and vulnerability to fraud, waste, and abuse. The Amtrak management viewed him as a threat, demanding Wiederhold sign a nondisclosure agreement about his leave. These actions were inappropriate attempts to control the OIG, following the investigation, the board revised Exec-1 and began a more productive working relationship with the OIG.
