Misleading Information From the Battlefield: The Tillman and Lynch Episodes

Abstract

The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform addresses misleading information surrounding the deaths of Corporal Patrick Tillman and the capture and rescue of Private Jessica Lynch during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Investigations into Corporal Tillman's faced challenges in determining what senior officials at the White House and Defense Department knew, with a widespread lack of recall among interviewed officials. A similar lack of recollection was encountered in the investigation of Private Lynch's inaccurate accounts, highlighting gaps in knowledge regarding the dissemination of misleading information to the media and the delay in correcting the false narrative surrounding her capture and rescue.
