Expect the Unexpected: The West Nile Virus Wake Up Call

Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs
Abstract
From the Senate Committee of Governmental Affairs, Ranking Member Senator Joseph Lieberman asked his staff to investigate the 1999 West Nile outbreak with focus on how the outbreak started and what could be learned from it. This investigation was conducted to serve the interest of public health, as Sen. Lieberman wished to prevent a similar outbreak from occuring in the region in the future. The report fortunately found that most of the state's response to the outbreak was overall positive and also lists potential improvements to allow for an even more successful response in the future, such as listing how the Center for Disease Control and Prevention failed to abide by their own strategy.
