Abstract
The Special Investigations Division of the House Committee on Government Reform investigated class sizes in Queens, New York for the 1999-2000 school year. They found that less than one out of every twenty students were taught in classes that met the national goal of 18 students per classroom. These goals were implemented because of overwhelming evidence indicating that class size reduction is one of the most effective ways to boost children's academic achievements. It was discovered that more than half of the students were taught in classes of 25 or more, and the issue of overcrowded classrooms was a problem in all grade levels.
