Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs
Subcommittee on Federal Spending Oversight and Emergency Management
Abstract
From the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, the Subcommittee on Federal Spending Oversight and Emergency Management led by Senator Rand Paul issued a weekly waste report looking into a program facilitated by the Department of Agriculture that subsidizes specialty crops. The report looks into what qualifies a specialty crop and the amount of money the United States is spending on this program. The Subcommittee finds that a large portion of crops are categorized as specialty crops, and that the federal subsidization of these crops totals approximately $72.5 million. Furthermore, the report denotes that even non-edible crops are defined as specialty crops which it takes issue with, and subsequently finds this program wasteful.
