Zachary Chesser: A Case Study in Online Islamist Radicalization and Its Meaning for the Threat of Homegrown Terrorism

Abstract
The Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs investigated terrorist threats to the U.S. posed by Islamist extremists. They used Zachary Chesser, now serving a 25-year sentence on terrorism-related charges as a case study for their investigation. Their focus was on web forums and videos that encouraged this kind of extremism. The Committee found that social networking sites play a large part in the recruitment of extremists in the United States.
