Abstract
The Special Investigations Division of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform highlights the economic challenges faced by the U.S., with over two years of continuous job losses and nearly three million private-sector jobs lost since January 2001. The focus is on the federal-state unemployment insurance program, traditionally a safety net during economic downturns. However, the benefits extension, providing 13 extra weeks, expired on December 31, 2003. The analysis estimates that approximately 46,700 workers in the Los Angeles-Long Beach metro area lost their benefits in the first three months of 2004, and 83,100 more are likely to lose benefits by the end of June, resulting in a significant economic impact on the area.
